Do You Remember?

by Freddie Bell

The 21st Night of September at Crooner’s, Urban Classic laid it down. Led by Michael Bland—Prince’s legendary drummer from the New Power Generation—the band delivered a set that was funky, familiar, and full of heart.

Jay Bee, G Sharp, Tommy Barbarella—each brought their own flavor. The horn section was locked in, punchy and precise. The bass player kept it deep and steady, and the lead guitarist didn’t miss a note all night. Mark Lickteig, formerly of Chantel’s R Factor band, handled the vocals with soul and ease—no flash, just seasoned delivery.

Ms. Hellfinger and I came dressed in purple Earth, Wind & Fire tees, a nod to that night at the Xcel when EWF played with Chicago a year ago. The band honored that legacy with hits like “September,” “Reasons,” and “Shining Star.”

Urban Classic slipped in some Sly, some James Brown, and teased some grooves that kept the room swaying—because at Crooner’s, you don’t dance, but you sure do feel it!!

They closed with “Let’s Groove,” and it landed just right. For me, the 21st of September carries extra meaning—my daughter’s birthday. So while the music played, we danced in our seats and danced to the last song too!! Good band, good night, good memory.
