Prayers are pouring in for Bishop T.D. Jakes after he suffered a medical emergency while on stage at the Potter’s House church in Dallas, Texas.
On Sunday, Jakes was on stage finishing an hour-long sermon when he lowered his mic and began to shake. A crowd quickly surrounded him to assist him.
In the sermon, Bishop Jakes was describing his love of preaching.
“I still love to preach, I ain’t tired of preaching,” he said. “Ever gone to the hospital to visit somebody and you thought you were going to encourage them and they encourage you? That’s what preaching is like. You think you’re giving out something but you’re getting back more than you gave.”
He then began to deliver a prayer: “Now Lord let the words from my mouth and the meditations in my heart be acceptable.” But his words began to trail off while finishing the prayer, saying, “oh Lord, my strength, my redeemer, let him go in peace,” before his mic began to fall and he started to slump and shake slightly.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the Potter’s House said the 67-year-old pastor and author received medical attention and is in stable condition.
“During today’s service, Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a slight health incident and received immediate medical attention following his powerful hour-long message,” the statement read. “Bishop Jakes is stable and under the care of medical professionals. The entire Potter’s House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers.”
No word on if Jakes was hospitalized following the health scare or what may have caused it. But, later on Sunday, Bishop Jakes’ daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, gave a joint update on his condition on Instagram.
“Obviously today could have been a tragic day but it wasn’t; by the mercy of God, by the grace of God, Bishop is doing well he’s recovering well, he’s under medical care, he’s strong,” said Touré Roberts. “We’re trying to get him to sit down, he’s the strong Bishop that we know, but we really can’t thank you enough for your prayers.”
“I’m so grateful that he’s already beginning to improve,” Sarah Jakes Roberts remarked. “It’s a reminder that even going into this holiday season, we need to love on the people who you hold near and dear and just take the time to be grateful for all the people God’s given you.”
Thousands of people commented on the Potter’s House statement on Facebook and offered their well wishes for a speedy recovery. Bishop Jakes founded the church in 1996. It boasts more than 30,000 members with several campuses in Texas.
